Cost structure

Where does your budget go?

  1. 01Step

    Concept and pre-production · ~15%

Strategic consultation, screenplay, storyboard, location scouting, casting, logistics. The phase that makes the difference between a good and a great film.

  2. 02Step

    Filming · ~50%

The largest cost block: directing, cinematography, lighting, sound, possibly actors, location fees, catering. Every shooting day costs – but every shooting day produces images that no stock footage can replace.

  3. 03Step

    Post-production · ~30 %

Editing, colour grading, sound design, music, possibly motion graphics or VFX. This is where raw material becomes a film that conveys emotion.

  4. 04Step

    Music and licenses · ~5%

Professionally licensed music or composed original tracks. The difference between a film that works – and one that moves you.

In detail

What influences the price of a brand film

Four cost areas determine the price of a brand film. The distribution shifts depending on the concept – but the structure always remains transparent.

Shooting days are the biggest lever

A shooting day typically costs between 3,000 and 8,000 € – depending on team size and equipment. A documentary brand film with real employees at your own premises often needs just one day. A cinematically staged brand film with actors, multiple locations, and elaborate lighting requires three to five.

Narrative form

Documentary or scripted?

The documentary approach shows your company as it is. Real employees on camera, real workflows, real atmosphere. The scripted approach tells a staged story with actors and dramaturgy. More elaborate, more expensive – but with an emotional impact that a documentary film rarely achieves.

For most SMEs and mid-sized companies, the documentary brand film is the better starting point. Authentic, affordable, and finished in 4–6 weeks.

Team size and equipment

A lean team (director, camera, sound) is sufficient for many documentary productions. As soon as you need more elaborate lighting, steadicam, drone shots, or set design, the team grows – and so does the budget.

Post-production: where the film is made

Picture and sound editing is the foundation. Colour grading gives the film its visual character. Sound design and music create the emotional layer. Motion graphics, 2D animations, or VFX are optional – but they can make complex content understandable where images alone are not enough.

Format comparison

Brand film vs. other film formats

Not every company needs a brand film. Sometimes a different format is the better investment.

All figures net. The number is the entry point for the format, not the limit at the top. Shorter formats need less time on set and therefore start earlier. What your project costs is settled before the shoot, item by item.
Format Entry price (net) Duration Best use case
Image Film from €8,000 1–4 min. Brand positioning, website, trade shows, sales
Recruiting Films from €8,000 1–3 min. Talent acquisition, careers page, job boards

Does a brand film pay off?

A brand film is not a cost item. It is an asset that works for 3–5 years – on your website, in presentations, at trade shows, on social media, in sales.

Why brand film costs work differently at ROCC Film

We are not an agency with overhead that needs to pass through three hierarchical levels before filming begins. And we are not a one-man operation doing everything alone. We are a well-established team with over 20 years of experience – small enough for personal attention, large enough for professional results.

What this means concretely for your budget

No account manager reformulating briefs. With us you speak directly with the makers – the people who write your screenplay, direct, and finalize the edit. This saves time, avoids misunderstandings, and makes the process more efficient.

Our founder Christian Martin Schäfer brings a rare combination: experience as an actor, director, and producer. This pays off especially in brand films where real employees stand in front of the camera. Because the biggest challenge of a brand film is not the technology – but making people look natural and charming.

100% customer satisfaction. Not as a marketing cliché, but verifiable: on Clutch, Google and ProvenExpert. Every single review: 5 stars.

Calculation

What does an image film cost per minute?

An image film isn't priced by the minute, but by effort — shoot days, team size, equipment and the scope of post-production. Runtime is almost never the deciding factor.

A 60-second scripted film with actors, multiple locations, and elaborate lighting is significantly more involved to produce than a three-minute documentary shot in a single day at your own location. A price per minute therefore says little about what you actually get — and even less about whether the film does its job.

One exception is pure animation and motion graphics: these are built frame by frame, so the effort genuinely does grow with runtime. For anything shot with a camera, though, the rule is: the concept determines the effort first, and the length follows from that — not the other way around.

So rather than asking about a price per minute, it's more useful to ask about the goal: where should the film run, who should it reach, what should happen afterward? From that, we at ROCC Film in Berlin work out how many shoot days, what team, and what scope of post-production your project actually needs. Review your quote

Which line items are often missing from an image film quote

Unexpected costs rarely happen on set — they come from line items that never made it into the quote: usage rights, licenses and extra versions. Clarify them before commissioning, so there are no add-ons later.

In the film industry, usage rights are negotiated as a buyout. This defines how long you may use the film (time), in which countries (territory), and on which channels (media). A film cleared for the website isn't automatically cleared for a trade fair, TV, or a paid social campaign — and that's exactly where additional charges tend to come from.

The same applies to additional versions: subtitles, an English language version, vertical cuts for social media or a re-edit next year are easy to plan for if you raise them from the start. As an afterthought, they almost always mean an extra round of editing and approval.

Also ask how many feedback rounds are included in the quote and who gives final sign-off on your end. A clearly defined approval process saves more budget in the end than any price negotiation.

Usage rights and buyout

Get it in writing how long, where, and on which channels you're allowed to use the film. Unlimited, worldwide rights for all digital channels is the simplest case.

Music, voiceover and stock material

Music licenses, voiceover recordings, and licensed stock footage are often billed as separate line items. Ask whether they're included and how long the licenses run.

Travel, locations, and permits

As soon as filming doesn't take place at your own location, travel, accommodation, location rental and shooting permits come into play. These items belong in the quote from the start.
